The Mel/Manuel project consists of two discontinuous concessions, the 1146 hectare Manuel concession and the nearby 20 hectare Mel concessions that was added to cover an old mine working that became available when the project was first visited. The claims are located in northwest Sonora, 40 kilometres south of the town of Sonoita which is on the Mexico/Arizona border.
The concessions are underlain by Pre-Cambrian granites intruded by andesite dykes of presumably similar age. Most of the lower relief areas are underlain by later Mesozoic biotite granodiorites. The eastern/northeastern portion of the concession is cut by a large Tertiary fault that produced a down dropped basin filled with ryholitic volcanics and tertiary gravels. The small Mel concession is centered on a low angle north-northwest dipping quartz vein that has numerous workings along its length. There is no data about the grades encountered in these workings.
The larger Manuel concession also covers several areas of old workings, the most extensive being a set of workings with extensive dumps of black andesitic volcanics referred to on Consejo maps as the "La Negrita Mine". There are a number of shafts, cuts and tunnels in this area but no records of past production which apparently centered on a 1-3 metres quartz vein.
Another area of extensive works is located in the south western part of the concession where the dumps suggest quartz veins were the main target for production. The valley floor here shows development of regolith (derived from the immediately underlying rock) placer which shows evidence of past dry placer mining in the form of numerous old pits and trenches. Samples from a one metre quartz vein in this area returned 3.5 g/t and 3.4 g/t gold.
Pediment will undertake data acquisition and analyses to generate relevant estimates of grades encountered by past workers in the area and use this to target areas on the concession for follow up work.
